PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AT PERTH’S CHILDRENS’ HOSPITAL

Sector: Infrastructure
Client: Office of Strategic Projects, Main Roads WA
Location: Nedlands, Perth WA
Services Provided: Estimating

Background

The colourful and aesthetically pleasing footbridge which traverses Winthrop Avenue in the City of Nedlands, was constructed to provide access for children and their carers to the beautiful Kings Park in Perth, WA. from the new Childrens’ Hospital.

WHAT WE DID

MGA were engaged initially by the Office of Strategic Projects and later by Main Roads WA to complete cost estimates for the Pedestrian Bridge. In engineering construction, it is usual that the term “Aesthetically Pleasing” translates to “Expensive”. This project was no exception. The structure is curved in both the vertical and horizontal profiles, which makes the fabrication of the steel complicated and therefore more costly.

In addition, the bridge was designed to be built in assemblies and transported to site in sections. MGA identified that the shape of the bridge could be modified slightly without any impact on the aesthetic appeal of the bridge. The sections to be transported became narrower, which significantly reduced the transport cost.

HOW IT TURNED OUT

Despite the significant challenges associated with estimating the cost of a bridge structure of this nature, MGA managed to provide timely and accurate cost information to our client in this regard, throughout the design phase of the project. We also managed to save our client and therefore the public some money along the way.
